When planning a trip to Sicily, a common dilemma is deciding to start out from Palermo or Catania. These two large cities are the island’s main gateways, and both provide opportunities to try Sicilian food and explore the island’s culture and history.

Visiting both Palermo and Catania is worth doing if you can, but not everyone who travels to Sicily has that kind of time. So, if you’re stuck trying to decide, let me show you the benefits of experiencing both places, and I’ll explain the comparison of Palermo vs Catania.

Why visit Palermo?

Quattro Canti, Palermo Blog

The capital of Sicily and one of Italy’s largest cities, Palermo is a great place to visit on the island.

Sightseeing in Palermo showcases the island’s history and culture, with various landmarks tracing the city’s evolution over the centuries. Tourists often like to focus on stories of the mafia when it comes to Palermo, but there are just as many stories from the past thousand years.

Grand avenues plus stunning medieval and Renaissance landmarks provide plenty of things to do around the beautiful city center of Palermo. These include Palermo Cathedral and the Royal Palace, but even just public spaces like the Quattro Canti, seen above.

And of course, Palermo offers countless opportunities to try cannoli, arancini, and more Sicilian food.

While Palermo isn’t a beach destination, it is close to Mondello Beach, one of Sicily’s finest beaches. From Palermo, you also have the options of day trips to Cefalu, Monreale, and even as far as Agrigento.

You can reach Palermo by direct train from the mainland, as well as by flights from major cities and ferries from around Italy.

  • Dive into Sicily’s history with cathedrals, palaces, and museums
  • Explore a city with beautiful architecture, but also local character
  • Explore the island’s northern beaches and easily visit Sicily’s west and centre

Why visit Catania?

Catania Attractions, Palermo or Catania

On Sicily’s east coast lies the port city of Catania.

Mount Etna overlooks this large city, which has its gems, but also its less-polished side. Yes, parts of Catania are gritty and faded, but these rough edges help its highlights shine.

When visiting Catania, tourists gravitate towards the city’s ancient landmarks and the elegant baroque architecture that surrounds its squares and avenues. Catania has some of the region’s most beautiful theatres and churches, but also a huge ancient Greek theater, and its own castle.

While you can find typical Sicilian food here, Catania goes a step further with its own signature items, such as pasta alla norma and seltz limone e sale.

You can also use Catania as a base to explore, with people typically making day trips to Mount Etna, but also Taormina and baroque cities such as Syracuse in Sicily’s southeast.

Catania is another main city to fly into for Sicily, but you can also get there by train, bus, and ferry from the mainland.

  • Find ancient sites mixed with baroque landmarks for a broad mix of things to see
  • Sample local specialties, alongside all of Sicily’s staples
  • Watch Mt. Etna from below or climb up it, with many other day trips to choose from

Which is best to visit, Palermo or Catania?

Palermo Cathedral, what to do in Palermo

While we’re comparing Palermo to Catania, the reality is that the two cities both offer a great experience to visitors.

If you can, visit both, even though the two are quite far apart. But if I’m forced to choose, Catania or Palermo, I have to suggest Palermo.

Palermo offers an easier introduction to what Sicily is like, and it’s a larger city with some standout attractions. Not that Catania doesn’t have its strengths too;  the chance to visit Mount Etna, local delicacies, and a long list of other day trip options all make it a great place to go.

As a destination, Sicily has surprising depth to it. Maybe on future visits, my recommendation will change, but for now Palermo is my pick.
