Vienna and Salzburg are the two most popular cities in Austria for tourists to visit. Each in its way captures what makes Austria such a special destination. But what should you do if you only have enough time to see one of these two? Is it better to visit Vienna or Salzburg?
Obviously, if you have the time it’s definitely worth visiting both Salzburg and Vienna. While I have admittedly spent a lot of time visiting Vienna, I’ve had the opportunity to visit Salzburg twice as well. Both cities quickly delight with their architecture, sense of culture, and love of music. Allow me to show why each city is worth visiting, before telling you which is better to visit.
Why Visit Vienna?

Vienna is not only the capital of Austria but also one of the most important cities in Central Europe. The city is home to several grand palaces from the days of the Habsburg Empire, countless elegant and active concert halls, and many world-class museums. Visitors can break up their sightseeing with time indulging in cake and coffee in the city’s old-fashioned coffee houses.
Travellers also don’t need to stick to sightseeing in Vienna during their visit. There are plenty of quick trips outside the city that you can do, while day trips from Vienna can take you to many places, even to foreign capitals such as Bratislava and Budapest. You can even just do a day trip to Salzburg from Vienna – have your cake and eat it too!
- Large city with many districts to explore
- So many palaces, museums, and concert venues to visit
- Lots of day trips you can do, including to Bratislava
Why Visit Salzburg?

Salzburg may only be the fourth largest city in Austria, but its smaller size can be quite useful for visitors. Not only can you easily get from one attraction to the next on foot, but a couple of days in Salzburg is all you need to see the city’s highlights. And if you find you have spare time, destinations such as Hallstatt and the Salzkammergut are a short trip away.
Speaking of attractions in Salzburg, the city doesn’t disappoint. The immense Hohensalzburg Fortress watches over the city, and the nearby mountains of the Alps, while the architecture of the Old Town perfectly captures the city’s charm. Across the scenic riverfront, Mirabell Palace will look familiar to fans of the Sound of Music and you can find one of the two houses in the city where Mozart lived.
- Smaller city that you can comfortably see in a few days
- Enjoy easy access to the Alps and the lake towns of Austria
- Strong ties to Mozart and the Sound of Music
Which is best to visit Vienna or Salzburg?

If you have to pick just one place to visit between Vienna and Salzburg, go to Vienna.
There’s no chance you run out of things to do in Vienna and I think Vienna has the edge on things where the two cities are similar. Vienna also offers a wider variety of attractions and is simply much easier to get to, both internationally and regionally.
If you’ve been to both cities, which do you recommend, Salzburg or Vienna? Are there other things about the cities you want to know before deciding which to visit? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.
