What to Do On a Day Trip to Skofja Loka, Slovenia

Slovenia may be a fantastic destination for the outdoors, but that doesn’t mean its small towns are any less enchanting. My recent trip reminded of some other destinations in Slovenia that I haven’t really written about, including the absolute gem that is Skofja Loka. Just a short distance northwest of Ljubljana, Skofja Loka is full of the kind of charming sights you expect from a pretty European town near the Alps. Best of all, a day trip to Skofja Loka gives you ample time to see the towns sights. So, if you’re curious about what you can see with your day trip from Ljubljana, this is what you have to look forward to.

Selska Sora Riverfront

While you’ll want to head to the Old Town of Skofja Loka, that first means crossing the Selska Sora river. That’s not such a bad thing as the riverfront is quite scenic with lots of greenery. In fact one of the most iconic sights of Skofja Loka is the view along the river towards the Capuchin Bridge.

Although the Capuchin Bridge is the most picturesque of the bridges in town, you actually get better views of the riverfront from the next bridge along.It was a view like the one above that first brought this town to my attention and why I wanted to visit Skofja Loka. Little did I know that this one spot barely scratched the surface of what to see in Skofja Loka.

Skofja Loka Old Town

Having crossed the river, you’ll soon reach some very narrow streets that make it clear you’re in the Old Town. The backstreets have their moments, but it’s not until you reach the main square of Mestni Trg that you get to see what a Skofja Loka day trip has in store for you. Right along the square you’ll see recently restored buildings painted in pretty pastel colours. Now, if you’re visiting Skofja Loka in spring or summer, the houses here will each have window boxes full of vibrant flowers.

All this colour makes the Old Town suitably picturesque and cheerful, encouraging you to continue exploring. It really won’t take you much longer to walk down the other streets and alleys as Skofja Loka is not huge. While wandering about you’ll find several churches, including the St. Jacob Church below and its elaborate vaulted ceiling. 

Homan House

While many of the houses and buildings in the Old Town are fairly similar, there is one building that stands out. Right at the northern end of the main square you’ll find Kavarna Homan. This cafe is situated inside three buildings that made up Homan House, a Renaissance manor restored after the earthquake in 1511. What makes Homan House stand out is the painted patterns and fresco that adorn its exterior. It’s the only building in town quite like this and gives you an even better sense of what Skofja Loka may have looked like in the Middle Ages.

Loka Castle Museum

Of the various things to do in Skofja Loka, one you won’t want to miss is Loka Castle. Immediately overlooking the Old Town, Loka Castle has been a fixture of the town since first being built in 1202. Like other parts of the town it was almost completely destroyed by the 1511 earthquake but was afterwards restored. Nowadays the castle houses the Skofja Loka Museum, with exhibits on all sorts of things related to the town. Visiting the museum you not only see the castle interior but displays on local history, ethnology and a comprehensive exhibit on local wildlife.

Visiting Skofja Loka as a Day Trip

Chances are, if you plan to visit Skofja Loka then you’ll be coming from Ljubljana. The good news is that it’s easy to reach the town from the capital city, either by driving or with public transport. If you rent a car while in Slovenia, then it’s about a 25 minute drive from Ljubljana.

Another approach is to take a guided tour to Lake Bled that stops at Skofja Loka along the way. That way you get to see multiple destinations in what I think is one of the best regions of Europe right now. Otherwise you’ll need to take a bus, with hourly departures and the trip taking 40 minutes. Either way it’s perfect for a day trip from Ljubljana.
